Also awkward

Built for headroom and cargo space, but not for style.
   CARISTAS contributor Michael R. Roy photographed this rather rudely converted 1957 Dodge Custom Royal and its bemused-looking owner, who was perhaps waiting for a part or simply taking a mid-repair break.
   Many Cuban Dodges are reskinned Plymouths, the so-called "Plodges" that Chrysler sold outside the United States. But Chryslerclub.org tells us that the Custom Royal that was built in Canada, source of Chrysler's export models, was the same as the U.S. car, so this example is all Dodge.
   Or it was, until the family-truckster top was substituted for the graceful roofline with which this four-door hardtop was originally equipped.

An even tastier trophy has emerged – a Mercedes-Benz 300SL, better known as the Gullwing.    Even on the Island of Surprises, I’d be astounded to come across one of these rare beauties. How the 300SL would have looked new. Wikipedia photo.     IN SIX YEARS , no topic here has drawn more attention than the story of Cuba's rotting Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe. Visitors from around the world seem endlessly appalled and fascinated by the sad fate of such a rare and beautiful car.      The same analytics program that tells me the home nations of these visitors tells me where on this blog they land – and it's apparent that many are missing the full story (or as full as anyone has been able to make it). The world's largest Internet indexer – you know who I'm talking about – insists on routing the curious to a five-year post and refuses to make note of subsequent entries.    Why?
